Walking Fitness Foundations

A self-directed routine of comfortable, consistent walks on a route you can repeat.

What it is

A self-directed routine of comfortable, consistent walks on a route you can repeat.

Why we created it

Consistency is easier to judge — and easier to keep up — when walks are comparable from day to day.

Goal

A comfortable, repeatable walking routine.

Before you begin

You’ll need

  • A familiar route you can use most days.
  • A way to note the time, such as your phone.
  • Suitable lead, harness and water for the conditions.

What you’ll do

Your first session

  1. Walk your usual route at a pace your dog finds comfortable.
  2. Note how long the walk took and how willing your dog was.
  3. Keep the route and conditions similar for the next few walks.
  4. The next day, note how comfortable your dog seems moving about.

Things to notice

  • Walk duration and willingness.
  • Next-day comfort and movement.
  • Heat, surface or other conditions that differed.

When to stop or get help

  • Pain, limping, unusual tiredness, breathing difficulty or heat stress — stop and seek veterinary advice.
  • Any feeding or activity instructions from your veterinarian still apply.
About this guide

This guide doesn’t automatically progress your dog’s walks. Any change is your decision, made one small step at a time.

Progress gradually and pause if your dog shows discomfort or reluctance.

Adapted into plain language from Nara’s prepared protocol material. It is general information, not a diagnosis or veterinary prescription, and it doesn’t report trial results.
