Treats Without the Drift

Accounting for extras and, where your dog’s overall plan already calls for it, cutting back on excess extras while protecting the main diet.

What it is

Accounting for extras and, where your dog’s overall plan already calls for it, cutting back on excess extras while protecting the main diet.

Why we created it

Treats and chews add up quietly and can crowd out a complete diet.

Goal

Useful rewards without drift, with the main diet protected.

Before you begin

You’ll need

  • A list of every calorie-containing extra.
  • Calorie labels or amounts where available.

What you’ll do

Your first session

  1. List all extras and check their amounts or labels.
  2. Pre-portion rewards for the day.
  3. Use smaller pieces, or part of the regular ration, where appropriate.

Things to notice

  • Total extras across the day.
  • Whether rewards still work for training.

When to stop or get help

  • A treat percentage alone doesn’t justify cutting total calories.
  • Underweight, unexplained weight loss, muscle decline or other adverse changes need review.
  • Any feeding or activity instructions from your veterinarian still apply.
About this guide

No automatic calorie deficit or unsupervised weight plan.

Progress gradually and pause if your dog shows discomfort or reluctance.
