Adequate digestible protein and essential amino-acid intake is necessary for maintenance of canine lean tissue and normal physiology, while canine evidence does not support a universal claim that progressively higher protein intake above adequacy produces better healthspan or lifespan.

Nara considers adequate protein a nutritional foundation, particularly because inadequate protein can compromise nitrogen balance and lean tissue. Some dogs, including older dogs or dogs consuming less total energy, may require greater protein density to remain adequate, but that is different from saying more protein is always better. Direct canine evidence showing a healthspan or lifespan advantage from pushing protein progressively above adequacy is not established.

What is known

Controlled canine studies have been used to estimate protein requirements and demonstrate physiological consequences of lower versus adequate protein intake. Dietary intervention work also indicates that protein amount and source can affect maintenance of lean body mass, especially under conditions where intake is marginal. The evidence base is primarily requirement, nitrogen-balance, body-composition, and related physiological evidence rather than long-term clinical-outcome or lifespan trials.

What is not known

Protein requirement depends on total energy intake, amino-acid profile, protein quality and digestibility, physiological state, age, and potentially disease status. Lean-body-mass preservation is biologically important but remains a surrogate unless linked to functional or clinical outcomes. Older requirement studies do not necessarily represent modern formulations, breeds, or all life stages. Evidence that avoiding inadequate protein is beneficial does not establish a monotonic benefit from increasingly high protein intake. Direct canine lifespan trials comparing adequate versus substantially higher protein intake are lacking.
