The claim we’re evaluating

Regular physical activity is a credible foundation for canine physical and behavioural function, but current canine evidence does not establish a universal exercise dose that maximizes healthspan or lifespan and does not demonstrate exercise-driven lifespan extension.

Nara considers regular, appropriate physical activity a sound canine health foundation, with evidence supporting function and associations with healthier aging outcomes. The science is much less precise about exactly how much, how intense, or which type of exercise is optimal for a given dog. Nara should therefore support activity without presenting a universal minutes-per-day, intensity, or lifespan prescription as scientifically established.

What is known

Large companion-dog observational datasets associate greater physical activity with lower odds of cognitive dysfunction in older dogs, although investigators explicitly note that the design cannot establish causation. Intervention research in older dogs suggests that structured physical activity can influence behavioural and functional measures over months. The available evidence does not establish a specific exercise dose-response curve for morbidity or lifespan in the general canine population.

What is not known

A large part of the aging literature is observational, making reverse causation particularly important because healthier dogs are able to exercise more. Owner-reported activity is not equivalent to objectively measured exercise dose. Short-term functional or behavioural change cannot be converted into a lifespan claim. Exercise type, intensity, frequency, duration, surface, climate, breed morphology, age, and baseline fitness are rarely standardized across companion-dog studies. Rehabilitation exercise for a dog with disease or injury is a different claim from general owner-directed activity.
