There is not good evidence that feeding raw food, by itself, makes dogs healthier than feeding a well-formulated complete kibble diet. Raw diets can be highly digestible and can change stool characteristics, the gut microbiome and blood metabolites. Some studies also find leaner body condition in raw-fed dogs. But those findings do not establish better long-term health or longer life, and diet groups often differ in calories, ingredients, activity and other factors. 1 2 3
The clearer tradeoff is food safety: raw meat diets create more opportunity for exposure to pathogens and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. Nutritional adequacy also depends on the actual product or recipe, not whether the food is labelled raw or kibble. 5 6
Raw feeding can cause real biological differences
A common mistake is to jump from different to better.
In a 2024 study, 28 dogs with a history of eating raw meat-based diets and 27 kibble-fed dogs were placed on standardized diets within their existing diet category for 28 days. Their fecal microbiomes and many serum metabolites differed. Raw-fed dogs also had higher fecal intestinal alkaline phosphatase, IgA and IgG, while systemic inflammatory markers including C-reactive protein, haptoglobin and serum IgG were similar between groups. The authors said the long-term health meaning of these changes remains unknown. 3
That distinction matters. A microbiome shift, a metabolite difference or a change in a local immune marker can be interesting without proving that dogs will develop less disease or live longer.
A 2026 narrative review reached a similar overall conclusion: raw diets can produce short-term differences in digestibility, stool and microbial measures, but the comparative studies often differ in ingredients, moisture, fiber, starch, fat and energy density at the same time. The review did not identify evidence establishing long-term clinical superiority of raw feeding as a category. 1
What about leaner body condition in raw-fed dogs?
This is one of the more interesting recent findings, but it does not show that raw food has a special anti-obesity effect.
A 2026 study compared 51 healthy dogs fed raw meat-based diets with 53 dogs fed commercial complete diets for at least a year. The raw-fed group had a median body condition score of 5/9 versus 6/9 in the comparison group. But the raw-fed dogs were also estimated to receive less energy relative to calculated requirements: a median of 89% versus 102%. They were more active and participated in dog sports more often. 2
So the practical lesson is stronger than the diet-format claim: calorie intake, activity and body condition matter. If a raw diet helps an owner portion food more appropriately, that could be useful. It does not follow that uncooked food itself caused the leaner body condition.
The same study also found nutritional differences that complicate a simple "raw is healthier" interpretation. The median calcium-to-phosphorus ratio in the raw rations was lower than the study's reference ratio, and raw-fed dogs had lower serum concentrations of several trace elements. The dogs did not show clinical signs of nutrient deficiency, so these findings are a reason for formulation scrutiny rather than proof that every raw diet is deficient. 2
Do large health datasets show a raw-food advantage?
Not convincingly.
A 2025 Dog Aging Project analysis included 27,478 dogs. Of those, 961 primarily ate commercial raw diets, 329 primarily ate homemade raw diets and 24,974 primarily ate extruded diets. Researchers compared 13 broad owner-reported health-condition categories. 4
The study did not show broad health superiority for raw-fed dogs. One association between commercial raw feeding and respiratory disease met the study's main statistical threshold in a pre-specified model, but it was attenuated and no longer met that threshold when breed was added to the adjustment. The authors emphasized that the analysis was cross-sectional, owner-reported and vulnerable to reverse causation, meaning a dog's health problem could influence the diet chosen rather than the diet causing the health problem. 4
That study is useful partly because of what it cannot tell us. It does not prove raw diets are harmful, and it does not prove kibble is optimal. It shows how difficult it is to infer health effects from diet labels alone when the individual foods, dogs and owners differ in many other ways.
The food-safety evidence is more consistent
Raw meat can carry organisms that heat treatment is intended to reduce. Dogs may also shed organisms without looking sick, creating a household exposure route.
In a UK study of 190 dogs, antimicrobial-resistant E. coli were detected in 54% of raw-fed dogs compared with 17% of non-raw-fed dogs. Multi-drug-resistant E. coli were detected in 25% versus 4%, and third-generation-cephalosporin-resistant E. coli in 31% versus 4%. Salmonella was detected in eight raw-fed dogs and none of the non-raw-fed dogs. This was an observational study and raw diets themselves varied substantially, but the difference in bacterial carriage was large. 5
A U.S. study sampled 100 raw meat-based dog diets from 63 suppliers. Researchers isolated 52 true or opportunistic pathogens from 30 diets and identified antimicrobial resistance across multiple isolates. That study tested products rather than disease outcomes in dogs, so it supports a contamination hazard, not a claim that 30% of dogs eating raw food will become ill. 6
The CDC currently does not recommend feeding raw pet food or treats because of the risk of germs to pets and people. AAHA similarly advises against raw or dehydrated nonsterilized animal-origin foods and notes that high-pressure processing can reduce bacterial numbers without making a product sterile. 7 8
This does not mean every raw meal is contaminated or every raw-fed dog becomes sick. The evidence is better interpreted as higher microbiological exposure risk, with the consequence depending on the organism, product, handling, dog and household.
Can a raw diet still be complete and balanced?
Yes. "Raw" describes processing, not nutritional adequacy.
A commercial raw diet can be formulated to meet recognized nutrient standards, just as a kibble can. A home-prepared raw recipe can also be properly formulated. The problem is that neither happens automatically. Meat, organs and bone in intuitive proportions are not a guarantee that calcium, phosphorus, trace minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids are appropriate over the long term. 1 9

For puppies, dogs with medical conditions, or home-prepared diets, formulation errors can carry higher stakes. Household risk also matters. If someone in the home is very young, pregnant, elderly or immunocompromised, raw-food pathogen exposure deserves particular caution. 7

Raw feeding can change digestibility, stool, microbiome and metabolic measures. Those effects are real enough to study. If a dog is thriving on a complete raw diet, this evidence is not a reason to claim that the diet is harming them. It is a reason to be deliberate about formulation and microbial risk. If a dog is thriving on a complete kibble, there is no evidence-based need to switch to raw simply because raw is marketed as more natural.
